Shatwooh – Twenty Six

Shatwooh or twenty six is not just a date for people of Kashmir. It’s an altercation between hegemonic power and people’s struggle. It’s a border line which delineates Kashmir from India, in experience and in identity also. Shatwooh is also a reminder for Kashmiris of the servitude of their freedom to the whims of a repressive state. Every year on 26 January, Kashmir is an internment camp. The meaning of democracy collapses into nothingness and absolute power of state reigns large on Kashmiri streets. Resistance, however wages on and stories are born; the bone-marrow of Kashmiri struggle.
